If you've been friends with me for long enough you probably already know this, but it bears repeating: I really, really like Billy Joel. "Glass Houses" was burned into my soul at a tender age, and though as an adult I recognize how completely ridiculous he is I CANNOT HELP BUT LOVE HIM JUST THE SAME.

The thing about Billy Joel is that he's unapologetically dorky and relentlessly sincere (qualities I can certainly relate to) and while I know that YES, he can be so damn cheesy and YES, half the time his narrative ballads make no sense and YES, he's often breathtakingly derivative and YES YES OH MY GOD YES he is constantly singing about things he has no personal experience with whatsoever I CANNOT BRING MYSELF TO CARE.

Billy Joel is hilarious and awesome, and I don't give a shit what those jerks on Slate think (nice timing, though, guys!) -- I will continue to love him, however fatally uncool that may make me.

About a week ago I rescued all my music off the near-dead ipod that had been languishing on my desk for a year. Suddenly I once again had EVERY SINGLE BILLY JOEL ALBUM EVER on my computer. So I suppose, really, this was bound to happen.

You May Be Right (I May Be Crazy)
a dweebtastic compilation of the musical stylings of one William Joel
[Download Here (28 tracks, 171 MB)]

Note that I've left off most of the songs that were ever actually popular -- no "Piano Man," no "Just The Way You Are," and DEFINITELY no goddamn "We Didn't Start The Fire." These are the songs that I personally enjoy for whatever reason -- because they're fun to sing along to, because they say something that's actually kind of interesting, because they're heartbreakingly sincere, because they're deliciously melodramatic, because they're hilariously insane, because they're inexplicably in French. (No, I have no idea what he was thinking.)

Track List!

01. Angry Young Man
02. Everybody Loves You Now
03. A Room Of Our Own
04. Close To The Borderline
05. Movin' Out (Anthony's Song)
06. Miami 2017 (Seen The Lights Go Out On Broadway)
07. Laura
08. All For Leyna
09. Pressure
10. Stiletto
11. Sometimes A Fantasy
12. She's Right On Time
13. This Is The Time
14. Vienna
15. Summer, Highland Falls
16. C'Etait Toi (You Were The One)
17. Scenes From An Italian Restaurant
18. Famous Last Words*
19. Code Of Silence**
20. Goodnight Saigon
21. The Stranger

23. Don't Ask Me Why
24. Tell Her About It
25. You May Be Right

You are not alone in your love for Billy Joel! Let us huddle together around a camp fire and sing "Leningrad" while drinking cheap vodka.

YEEEEEEEESSSSSSSSSSSSSSS

Also, seriously, say what you will about the guy but he's done some pretty amazing stuff! How many American musicians did shows in the USSR after the Berlin Wall went up, you know?

*fangirls ridiculously* XD

Without Billy Joel, there'd be no Ben Folds (at least I think so).

"We Didn't Start the Fire" and "Piano Man" rankle me (though lord I can relate to the phrase 'real estate novelist') - but "And So It Goes" is one of my favorite love songs ever. Wanted to do a Maison Ikkoku AMV to that a while back.

And you're so right about Ben Folds, lady. <3

Billy Joel rules. It's too bad it costs over $100 for a ticket to see the "Face to Face" tour show with Elton John, and that they sold out in less than a day, or I'd so be there.

The dean of my college is apparently an old high school buddy of Billy Joel's. I always thought that was pretty cool, even as a full-of-it freshmen convinced that nobody over the age of 30 could possibly be hip. :D

My buddy Jenni got to go to one of his "Farewell Shea Stadium" gigs last summer. SO JEALOUS! Billy Joel rocks. My personal favourites are State of Grace, It's Still Rock and Roll to Me and Movin' Out (which is on your list! Yay!) but I'll listen to practically anything he does anyway :)

I got to see him at MSG last year -- I actually went TWICE, with crap seats the first time and then again with craigslist tickets on the floor -- and had an absolutely fantastic time. Especially since he played lots of weirder songs like "Stiletto" and "Zanzibar" and yet EVERYONE KNEW ALL THE WORDS ANYWAY.

Rock the hell on. <3

Slate is so wrong. They don't UNDERSTAND the magic of Billy!

I too was obsessed with Glass Houses as a child. It was my favorite record ever! I listened to it over and over, blissfully singing along. (Later on, my favorite tape was Billy's concert from Russia!)

SO OF COURSE I HAVE TO DOWNLOAD THIS. More cheese, please. <3

Billy Joel always makes me happy! When we used to go on long car rides, or on airplanes, we would take Billy Joel cassettes and play them the whole way there, and back (until I discovered Les Miz, which was my replacement for BJ on airplanes, but not in cars).

The first concert I ever went to was a Billy Joel concert on New Year's Eve. I still remember being super excited when a teacher pointed out his Long Island house as our bus drove past on a school trip. His music is often awesome, usually good, and anyone who thinks to tell me otherwise can suck on an appendage that I must admit I lack.

Ooo, shiny. I have a lot of this stuff on tape. No, really, the first tape I bought with my own money was Billy Joel.

But even with my love of Billy Joel, "Just the Way Your Are" is the most offensive piece of crap I have ever listened to.

OK, for all those who say there is no such thing as a guilty pleasure, I refute them with Billy Joel. Because there is guilt, so much guilt! But also pleasure. I cannot resist Billy Joel. And if people mock his pretentious and insincere lyrics, I look at them funny and ask them how long they have been taking pop lyrics seriously. And then I walk away, quietly boogieing to Scenes from an Italian Restaurant.

Also, it is a Long Island thing. It is about my people. No one understands. And Ron Rosenbaum in Slate just has all kinds of ludicrous neurotic issues about being from Long Island. See his "Devil in Long Island" piece, which he links to in the Billy Joel review, where he strives so, so hard to be profound about Long Island and falls so, so short. Bah! to Ron Rosenbaum.
