So there are some ~*~Events~*~ this summer that I'll be at, the first of which is tomorrow in NYC and the most surprising of which is being on a panel at Infinitus. If you're at all curious about such things, they're detailed over at my other journal.

Also:

• Last night I went to a Newsies sing along here in Brooklyn with [livejournal.com profile] hoshizora. It was put together by (and a charity event for) the Rude Mechanical Orchestra, which as far as I can tell is a social justice marching band. As a result, the crowd was pretty excellent -- 100% sincere, full of people who recited the opening monologue right along with me and sang their hearts out, completely free of self-conscious hipsters trying to impress their friend, peppered with newsboy caps and suspenders -- and we had a really fantastic time. Watching it with that particular group of people, I was surprised at how very RELEVANT it proved to be to their cause. I don't usually think about Newsies in the context of social justice, but of course that's at the core of everything it's doing. I'm glad to have had the opportunity to sing "Seize the Day" at the top of my lungs in a church basement full of activists. It was pretty rad!

• I spent a lot of the past couple days working on a pair of leather toe guards for my new skates! They came out a lot better than I'd expected them to, and I'll use what I learned to make some more heavy duty ones for [livejournal.com profile] hoshizora, whose skates have been getting pretty beat up at derby practice.

• I've been rereading a certain giant-ass Zuko fanfic of mine as part of my efforts to FINISH the damn thing already. It's a little strange to be speedreading 100,000 words of my own prose like this, and it certainly doesn't do a lot for my confidence as far as how well I paced it. But I have PLANS for the epilogue, and hopefully I'm in the final stretch.

• I wish that I was faster at reading/writing/drawing/etc. Where did this week go? Where did the SPRING go? I've gotten a lot done, but there's SO MUCH LEFT and it seems like I'm never quite caught up.

• Shit. Have to buy SDCC plane tickets. Blerg. x_____x

...I really must watch that film at some point. My previous urge to do so has abated rather in the face of Christian Bale turning out to be a massive cunt.

YES TO THE REREAD AND EVEN MORE TO THE FINISH. YOU CANNOT LEAVE ME HANGING AS YOU HAVE DONE THUS FAR. Jeeeeet listen to your HEART & do what FEELS RIGHT & other appropriate homilies, or you will force me to write self-insert fic in which I MANACLE THE PAIR OF YOU TOGETHER, and that will not be dignified for any of us. :3

It is a completely ridiculous movie in nearly every possible way, BUT! It also has shockingly high production values, excellent songs, hundreds of dancing newsboys and piles of homoerotic subtext? So you know. *SHRUG*

And man, I FEEL SO IRRESPONSIBLE FOR HOW MUCH TIME I'M SPENDING ON FIC MATTERS THIS WEEK BUT HOLY CHRIST I NEED TO BE DONE D:

Hey! Those toe guards actually look pretty good! I've been getting into leatherworking myself and if there's one thing I've learned so far...its that I hate sewing leather ;p So kudos on what appears to be a durable stitch job! :D

And yeah..artists need clone armies. Seriously XP not enough hours in the day.

I have a giant cut on my thumb because of that damned leather needle, but I only ripped out ONE of the holes I'd punched and they both seem to fit just fine -- AMAZING! I'd only worked with leather once before and was mostly making things up as I went, so I'm just glad it didn't all end in disaster!

(I need the ability to upload information to my brain directly, and perhaps download narrative content as well....in, you know, a few minutes instead of DAYS AND DAYS x______x )

Ouch. Yeah I tried sewing leather on a sketchbook I made a while back and..well, my thumb knows your thumb's pain XP I just rivet everything now. Easier.

The second they invent a way to connect to the internet/word processing/photoshop during sleep is the second we become fountains of content XP

Is jealous about the Newsies Sing-A-Long. Sigh.

Also...are you doing roller derby? Again I be jealous. :)

Nope, I'm just skating for my own amusement -- my buddy Paul is the one who's doing derby. :)

Newsies! The last Bastion of hipster-free, completely un-ironic enjoyment of cheesy childhood nostaligia!!

This is good to know. :D

I think the key is that while it's very very silly it's never actually BAD in a way that enables you to mercilessly make fun of it. That would get boring within about ten minutes -- if you're watching it for the "lulz" you won't get through the whole thing.

Unlike me, who physically shook Paul out of sheer excitement when Spot Conlan was about to appear on screen.

For some reason, the promise of spending hundreds of dollars on transportation just makes me a little hesitant! 8|

What are toe guards on skates for? I am no expert but it is not a thing I've seen before so I am curious. :^)

Basically, they're to keep me from damaging the toes of my skates, particularly when I trip. I spend a lot of time skating on asphalt outside, and the third time I took these skates out I tore up one of the toes pretty badly. SO: guards! Which I can just replace if they get worn out. :D
