COMIC CON!

SO.

WHO ELSE IS GOING TO BE AT SAN DIEGO COMIC CON THIS YEAR?

CUZ [livejournal.com profile] hoshizora AND I ARE GONNA TEAR UP THE TOWN.

...by which I mean, we'll stand quietly in a lot of lines, and try to hang out with various friend peoples, and generally behave ourselves.

Looks like my weekend is going to end up structured around the Legend of Korra Panel, the Avatar Fan Panel that [livejournal.com profile] avatar_mom is running, and hassling folks with whom I'm acquainted, but I'm generally up for additional frivolity!

ETA: So apparently now I'm trying to organize an ATLA fanwork meetup party? Hmm.
ali_wildgoose: (Default)
I mean that both literally and figuratively!

So I guess [livejournal.com profile] emsariel and I became homeowners last month? And now we're about to move with [livejournal.com profile] hoshizora to our new digs? Like, as in THIS SATURDAY MORNING? And I still have countless boxes of crap to pack up, and piles of trash to throw away, and large pieces of furniture to find new homes for?

But you know, I ordered a Hawaiian pizza, so I'm sure it'll be fine. Pineapple fixes everything. (Unless you're [personal profile] jlh, in which case Rhubarb fixes everything.)

Also a BOOK SEEMS TO HAVE COME OUT YESTERDAY?!

With SOME THINGS in it that...I wrote?!!?!?

It's only in comic shops for now (or anyone else that orders through Diamond) but it'll be in regular bookstores soon enough, and it sounds like people's Amazon orders have shipped...

...so I'll just be over here in the corner biting my nails and hoping people like it!

Except that I'll actually be putting shit in boxes and scaring the crap out of the cats.

And eating pizza.

I am trying desperately to finish my technically-overdue submission for an ATLA mini-bang, which has taken the form of a Katara-centric Avatar/Harry Potter crossover.* I would have finished it earlier, but I forced myself to plow through a lot of comic-drawing and freelance work first. This explains why I'm up at 2AM! This also explains why I am super-behind on my email, in particular some email that I desperately owe to a certain lady in Yorkshire!

However, this also means I'm awake to witness the appearance of an Avatar Fanfic Author Love Meme on my flist!

Guys. Love Memes are the best.

THE BEST.

I'm a little tired to do much with it tonight, myself. But I'll have to think of SOME KIND OF NONSENSE to post on it tomorrow!

*WHO AM I AND WHAT AM I DOING?!?!?!
ali_wildgoose: (scar)
For reals this time!

Remember, ages and ages ago, when [livejournal.com profile] yaytime and I made a trailer for the new NickMag Avatar comics we were working on? And how, because of the magazine's untimely demise, over 75 pages of brand-new completely finished Avatar comics were never published in English? Some of them never published at all?

Apparently Dark Horse is finally doing something about it!

I am super-psyched about this announcement, you guys. As much as I'm a little sad that I don't get to be more directly involved, I'm jazzed as all hell that these comics will finally see the light of day!

I'm not sure which of the stories I worked on will be included, unfortunately....fingers crossed that "Swordbenders" is among them.... *____*
ali_wildgoose: (Default)
I decided to go ahead and offer copies of Zuko's Story through LJ after all -- if you're interested, the info's over here on my other journal!

Also, thank you so much for the photos! Y'all are fantastic! I'm gonna see if I can round up a few more, but then I'll go ahead and see if I can make the project in my head work the way I think it will!

Now: a few more rows of crochet, and then I'm off to do Holiday Errands in the city!
ali_wildgoose: (Default)
1) I would really like to move forward with this previously-mentioned project, but right now I don't have nearly enough photos. So if you are a lady and have a digital camera (or a photo and a scanner) and a few minutes to spare, I would really appreciate your help! Again, the photos will be completely anonymous -- I have no interest in outing people on the internet. <3

2) Now that it's officially holiday shopping season, I was thinking I might sell a limited number of copies of "Zuko's Story," signed and personalized with little doodles in them, through my LJ...is this something any of you would be interested in? I am conflicted, as I really hate drawing that kind of attention to myself! :|

NYCC!

Ima gonna be at New York Comic Con this upcoming weekend! I made a whole post about it on my other journal, but the salient points are:

- Table T-15, NYCC Artist Alley
- Sharing with the lovely and talented [livejournal.com profile] gallo_de_pelea and [livejournal.com profile] rufftoon (Who're bringing "The Less Than Epic Adventures of TJ and Amal" and "Water Tribe," respectively.)
- I'll have Zuko's Story, a Chronin preview, some prints, and my last copies of that "Enter the Fire Nation" Nick Magazine comic from a few years back! (The one with the "Mai and Zuko go on a date" story, which may be relevant to a few of your interests)

I can only hope I'll have the chance to complain about certain movie franchises with some of you in person. Or, you know, shamelessly fangirl EK and Johane. Whatever, I'm game. ;)

I generally make it a policy to restrict the posting of fanwork to Wildgoosery, but in this case the work in question won't be over there for a while. Also it seems like something my not-generally-super-into-fanfic friends might like. So....yes.

My fic for the Avatar Big Bang finally went up! It's called Son of Heaven, is 10,000 words, and is primarily about Iroh dealing with the difficult weeks after the death of his son, Lu Ten. There's no kissing of any kind, so no need to worry about being blindsided by a ship you're not interested in.

You can read it over here! Apparently the mod for the community opened up comments to non-members (although they're screened at first) so if you have anything to say, I'd love to hear it! This is a fic I've been meaning to write for years, and it was pretty cool to finally have the time an the excuse to do it.

(.....man, why do I get so embarrassed about posting links to fic on this journal? It's not like y'all don't know I'm a giant nerd... o________o )

Anyway, b-back to working on Chronin! And that other giant-ass fan project I'm slowly crawling my way through....
ali_wildgoose: (Default)
So far it is pretty great! A couple people seem to actually care about the Zuko Book, and everyone has been super-nice! Say what will will about HP and its fandom -- rarely have I been at a con so overwhelmingly positive and well-intentioned.

I am super-nervous about my reading/signing/keynote panel tomorrow (uuuuuuughgghskdfjksdjfsafksjdf) but that's fine! Because I'm so behind on my freelance work that I have PLENTY to keep me distracted until then!

I am also feeling more nostalgic for my Potter fandom days than I have felt in a very VERY long time. 22-year-old me would have freaked the fuck out at that welcoming feast, let me tell you. LET ME TELL YOU. She would also have been in her Hogwarts uniform, giant-roller-skating-related-ass-bruise-and-roadrash-combo be damned. (oh yeah, that happened. Sitting down was kind of an adventure for a few days thar)

The Ladies have talked me into using some of my super-old Harry/Draco fic as my material for the reading tomorrow, since most of my current work is either ATLA-related or comics or both. I hope everyone is duly entertained by what my younger self thought was TOTALLY AWESOME to put in the first chapter of a fanfic.

anywayBACK TO WORK

(sorry, I was helpless in the face of that subject line once it occurred to me)

As alluded to previously, I am going to be at Infinitus next month, mostly so that I can participate in the Friday afternoon "keynote luncheon" with Naomi Novik, R.J. Anderson, Karen Healey, and one other possibly-supposed-to-be-a-surprise-guest-so-I'm-not-sure-if-I'm-allowed-to-mention-her-name friend of mine. The topic of the panel will be "fan writers turned pro," an issue which I have some FEELINGS about, many of which I've discussed at length on this journal or perhaps regaled (assaulted?) some of you with in person.

So basically, I am posting to ask:

• Man, what should I even talk about? I assume I should be formulating Notes of some kind beforehand and getting my thoughts in order. Are there particular issues or perspectives I should be pondering? Experiences of mine I should make sure to mention? (aside from the obvious ATLA-related HOW IS THIS MY JOB anecdotes, of course....but even then, what aspects of that situation are other people actually interested in hearing about?)

• Aside from [livejournal.com profile] pinkfinity and [livejournal.com profile] jlh and [livejournal.com profile] bookshop, will any of you be there?

• This is a Harry Potter conference but man, I have NOT really been paying attention to HP fandom in a looooooong-ass time. I have no idea what awesome fics have been written post-canon. So tell me: what should I read? What fic has been EXCELLENT and aligns to some degree with my narrative priorities? ie, what should I be putting on my ipod to read on the plane?

(PS: I FINALLY BOUGHT MY COMICCON TICKETS, so there is that)
ali_wildgoose: (Default)
So there are some ~*~Events~*~ this summer that I'll be at, the first of which is tomorrow in NYC and the most surprising of which is being on a panel at Infinitus. If you're at all curious about such things, they're detailed over at my other journal.

Also:

• Last night I went to a Newsies sing along here in Brooklyn with [livejournal.com profile] hoshizora. It was put together by (and a charity event for) the Rude Mechanical Orchestra, which as far as I can tell is a social justice marching band. As a result, the crowd was pretty excellent -- 100% sincere, full of people who recited the opening monologue right along with me and sang their hearts out, completely free of self-conscious hipsters trying to impress their friend, peppered with newsboy caps and suspenders -- and we had a really fantastic time. Watching it with that particular group of people, I was surprised at how very RELEVANT it proved to be to their cause. I don't usually think about Newsies in the context of social justice, but of course that's at the core of everything it's doing. I'm glad to have had the opportunity to sing "Seize the Day" at the top of my lungs in a church basement full of activists. It was pretty rad!

• I spent a lot of the past couple days working on a pair of leather toe guards for my new skates! They came out a lot better than I'd expected them to, and I'll use what I learned to make some more heavy duty ones for [livejournal.com profile] hoshizora, whose skates have been getting pretty beat up at derby practice.

• I've been rereading a certain giant-ass Zuko fanfic of mine as part of my efforts to FINISH the damn thing already. It's a little strange to be speedreading 100,000 words of my own prose like this, and it certainly doesn't do a lot for my confidence as far as how well I paced it. But I have PLANS for the epilogue, and hopefully I'm in the final stretch.

• I wish that I was faster at reading/writing/drawing/etc. Where did this week go? Where did the SPRING go? I've gotten a lot done, but there's SO MUCH LEFT and it seems like I'm never quite caught up.

• Shit. Have to buy SDCC plane tickets. Blerg. x_____x
ali_wildgoose: (Default)
So tomorrow is Free Comic Book Day! At which there will be a preview for the Zuko!Prequel! HOW ABOUT THAT! (more info on the other journal if you're interested)

I signed up for the Gotham Girls Basic Training next month, so I can work on my quad skating skills (or rather, my lack thereof.) I'm pretty excited about it, actually! I'm not a particularly serious athlete but there are some basic skills I've had a hard time figuring out on my own, not to mention the poor shape of my basic form. I've bought the required equipment I didn't already have (helmet, mouth guard, elbow guards) and now you know...COMMITTED!

On a related note: still trying to figure out whether or not I want to buy new, higher-quality quads for myself. The skates I have now were bought back in October while [livejournal.com profile] hoshizora was first visiting, and I've gotten a lot of use out of them since then. But they're men's vinyl figure skates of moderate quality, and I'm starting to get good enough that quality matters. I tried on [livejournal.com profile] hoshizora's speed skates the other day, and even though they're like two sizes too big for me they STILL felt more comfortable and better fitted than my current skates. Only problem is, a decent pair of used speed skates is gonna cost at LEAST $200 and probably significantly more.

Hmm.

This would be less of a problem if not for the last item in this post: my cat! Julien! Who I adore and who is over 17 years old! And who had to go to the vet twice this week and is now on antibiotics because of a kitty UTI, which caused him to yowl horribly and pee in places he was not supposed to. Fortunately the meds seem to be helping and he's on the mend, but...guys. GUYS. I don't want to think about how much those vet trips and blood tests and urine cultures cost me. I don't want to think about it at all.

Oh, Julien. You may have cost me a pair of skates, buddy, but you're worth it. <3

Icon meme!

Taken from a great many people!

1. How do you feel right now?

The rest behind here! )

In other news, it's really nice out but I'm trying to make myself work on freelance instead of going roller skating. Later tonight, I will start hand-sewing a 19th century-style petticoat. I will also try not to freak out about how A Certain Zuko Book Thing is coming out in like a month (!!!!) which means HUMAN BEINGS (!!!!!!!) will READ IT (!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!)

ali_wildgoose: (Default)
So I have not posted in a while, at least not properly! This is for a lot of reasons, but mostly I've just been a bit off-kilter -- new year, new roommate, and a complete inability to get things done when I would like them to be done. I've felt a little off-balance for the last few weeks, but fortunately I seem to be getting my feet back under me again and my productivity is starting to crawl back toward where it needs to be.

Admittedly, part of the problem is that I've been making a big effort to be less of a weirdo hermit -- more cooking, more going out on errands and walks and skates when I need to, more actually going to the events my friends organize, more you know...being an adult who takes care of herself properly? ALAS, I have not quite gotten the knack of balancing this with my freelance/personal commitments quite as quickly as I would have liked. So lots of panicking as I try to force myself to meet deadlines while being kind to [livejournal.com profile] emsariel and [livejournal.com profile] hoshizora and cooking real food and getting exercise and seeing friends ALL AT ONCE SOMEHOW?

Hmm.

At least I finished the first draft for the second-to-last-installment of my Giant Crazy Ba Sing Se Fanfic? I am praying that [livejournal.com profile] jlh and [livejournal.com profile] kittyjimjams and [livejournal.com profile] hoshizora can help me beat it into something like acceptable shape, because I have not updated that story in a SHAMEFULLY LONG TIME and I feel like an ass. :|

ETA: OH ALSO

Thanks very much to everyone who took the time to wish me a happy birthday! I've been feeling kind of down and a little isolated, particularly from internet-friends, so it cheered me up A WHOLE DAMN LOT to be remembered by folks. Y'all are awesome and ILU <3

ALSO ALSO

If you create fanwork and you're in ATLA fandom, you should consider signing up for [livejournal.com profile] avatarbigbang with me. JUST CUZ. The deadline is very generous and it sounds like it'll be good times!
ali_wildgoose: (Default)
[livejournal.com profile] space_coyote (aka Nina Matsumoto, the artist) just got word that her pencils have been approved. We have to brainstorm a way to fix a clarity problem in the first couple pages, but other than that?

NADA.

Here's hoping it'll be smooth sailing from here on in! *____*
ali_wildgoose: (Default)
YET AGAIN I'm a few days away from a deadline and completely freaking out (which in this case involved running away to my mom's place on Cape Cod in an attempt to prune distractions) BUT! I wanted to emerge long enough to share a mini-update on what's going on with the Zuko!Prequel!

SO UH...you know, with these things it's impossible to say what will happen or what problems will come up until the books are printed and on shelves. But right now I'm pretty optimistic! We SEEM to have gotten the script through the approval process with only a few, small changes, and (fingers crossed) hopefully the same will be true for [livejournal.com profile] space_coyote's completely fantastic pencils. (seriously, I get little shivers of joy just flipping through these things. I feel like between her and [livejournal.com profile] yaytime I've won the Awesome Goddamn Collaborator sweepstakes.)

Dave and I wrote a book about Zuko being sent away on his tiny boat and struggling to find his place in the world and having adventures with handsome outlaws and sitting beside his uncle on hillsides while they talk about family and loss, and somehow we actually managed to shepherd the thing (INTACT!) through all the obstacles that invariably turn up with projects like this one, and OH MY GOD YOU GUYS I THINK IT MAY ACTUALLY BE OKAY? MAYBE?

Again: fingers crossed. I'm still ready for it all to collapse in on itself in a horrific black hole of awful. But I can't help but savor the little glimmers of hope.

So anyway...ANYWAY! I mentioned before that there's an Amazon page up already, which remains pretty great. But today I discovered that I apparently have an author page on the Random House website as well! Given that early on in this process I was usually left off of press releases and forgotten about in panels, it's all the more rewarding to have that dumb little page to open up and gaze upon like an idiot.

You guys.

YOU GUYS.

THIS MAY ACTUALLY BE OKAY.

*_______*
ali_wildgoose: (Default)
I'm less than ten pages away from the end of the prequel, and despite the fact that it's due TOMORROW I'm feeling pretty good. I wish I'd finished about three or four hours ago, but WE CAN'T HAVE EVERYTHING WE WANT and right now I'm just trying to concentrate on banging it out fast enough for [livejournal.com profile] yaytime to have time to properly look it over.

I owe several of you emails, replies to LJ comments or RL interactions of some sort, for which I am very sorry! I'm also a day late posting my next chapter of the BSS AU, because I haven't had time to go in and do a few last revisions, let alone proofread and code it. I haven't started making dinner yet because I keep thinking I can get this out to Dave before taking that much time away from the computer.

But you know, at this moment I'm surprisingly okay and chill about the whole thing? Just gotta buckle down.

I think, weirdly, that the fact that this is the end of the story is helping. I'd expected to be freaked out about screwing it up, but mostly I'm just incredibly glad that I've had the chance to write it at all. Iroh is talking to Zuko about family and loss and hope, and when I'm done the scene will be proofed by my awesome cowriter and drawn by an incredibly talented artist, both of whom have been an absolute joy to work with.

This summer has been insane and exhausting, but seriously? My life could be a helluva lot worse.
ali_wildgoose: (Default)
Taking a break from work (or, you know, from trying to make myself work) to pimp a thing that a few of you might be interested in.

There's this new community activity thingy called [livejournal.com profile] atlaland? With a team for each nation and different kinds of challenges each week and like...you earn points? I don't know, it seemed like some low-commitment fun and I am ALL ABOUT this kind of Happy Funtime Fandom Unity Activity generally speaking.

More info over on the community profile. I am in [livejournal.com profile] the_fire_nation which is currently SUPER-UNDERPOPULATED for whatever reason. Just saying. You know. In case you wanna come hang in my internet clubhouse or some shit.

Now: back to writing the Zuko!Prequel! WHICH IS DUE IN LIKE A WEEK HAHAHAHA GOD THIS WEEKEND IS GOING TO BE SO FUN RIGHT? ;_______;
ali_wildgoose: (Default)
Apparently you can pre-order the Zuko-tastic prequel graphic novel from Amazon already?! Some of the information is wrong -- the book is probably going to be 100 pages, not 176 -- so I have no idea if that May release date is accurate. But still! *laughs* Although man, who's this "Nickelodeon" guy who's supposedly the author? ;)

I spent this weekend trying to crawl my way out from under a completely insane flu (although not THAT flu) and have only just gotten to the point where I can stay awake long enough to get much of anything done. So...TIME TO GO WORK ON THE AIRBENDER BOOKS? (And various other things that I owe various other people, like the extremely patient [livejournal.com profile] goraina.) The deadline for the scripts for BOTH of the books is early October, but since [livejournal.com profile] hoshizora will be arriving at the end of September I have quite a bit of motivation to get this stuff mostly finished even earlier than that. This wasn't a great month for my body to horribly betray me, but you know...I'll manage. I just ordered a giant pile of groceries from Fresh Direct, so at least I'll be able to hunker down in the apartment and slave away without having to go outside for sustenance. (I ordered myself an entire steamed lobster and a pint of cocktail sauce, I am so excited you don't even know.)

Finally: Anyone coming into town for New York Anime Fest? [livejournal.com profile] jetbaby, you're gonna be there, right?
ali_wildgoose: (Default)
It's been one of those crazy weeks for a lot of reasons (kind of like it's been one of those crazy summers) but the last day or so have been pretty all right, I have to say. A big long-term project was wrapped up, which is ALWAYS just....yes. Finishing things is awesome. AWE. SOME.

And after spending the weekend under the shadow of possible!problems, it looks like things are moving along nicely with the prequel graphic novel, about which I am ludicrously excited. [livejournal.com profile] space_coyote has gotten the first chunk of script and hasn't sent me any "WTF IS THIS NONSENSE?!" emails, so that's good! VERY GOOD!

It kills me that [livejournal.com profile] yaytime and I can't really talk about the story just yet, because I think we've come up with some pretty fun stuff, and I can't wait to see what y'all make of it! I think fans will be surprised by some of the faces that turn up and pleased by the events that we decided to focus on. We're giant nerds and we love ATLA like A WHOLE DAMN LOT, and our nerdy love is ALL OVER this script, it's hilarious. Those of you who know me at all will laugh VERY VERY HARD when you see some of what we did, of that I am sure.

Also, now that I'm sitting here choosing an icon for this post: if any of you were to make/link me to icons of 1) Zuko on his ship with the shaft of OMGAVATAR light bursting from the horizon, 2) bandaged!Zuko looking like an understandably sad boo at the WAT, or 3) AGNI KAAAAAAIIII -- that would be pretty great! They are all icons I find myself wanting to use CONSTANTLY in relation to this project, BUT FOR SOME REASON I DON'T HAVE THEM?!
