It probably says quite a lot about me that I'm sitting here on the floor in the San Diego International Airport, watching a video of Tangled crew lip-syncing to "Something That I Want" at the Disney Animation Studio, and it is totally making me tear up.

Sometimes I really miss working in animation, you guys.

Those people are the best people.

I don't usually cross-post from Tumblr, but sometimes there is a thing that's SO HILARIOUSLY AND EMBARASSINGLY relevant to my interests that I pretty much can't help myself.

Today, it's Hussalonia's cover of Billy Joel's 1980 album Glass Houses, which has changed my life forever. (You can alo listen to the first track -- "You May Be Right" -- streaming on my original Tumblr post, if you like)

From their site:

“Pop does not mean popular” is the Hussalonia motto. But sometimes pop is popular. Really popular. Take Billy Joel for instance. I bet your mom loves Billy Joel. Why shouldn’t she? He was handsome and wrote dramatically sweet pop songs like “Piano Man” and “Just The Way You Are.” But popularity wasn’t enough for Joel; he was an angry and cynical guy like you. He was a pop music scholar, like you. He didn’t want your mom’s love, he wanted your love: you, the snobby rock-critic, with your punk and new wave records. Enter 1980’s Glass Houses. Influenced by The Jam, The Cars, Elvis Costello as well good old Paul McCartney (who just made his own “new wave” record: Back To The Egg), Joel was determined to roughen up his image and earn some street cred. Instead, he earned his first number one single and a Grammy for Best Male Rock Vocal Performance. Sorry, Bill.

Today, Poor Billy Joel is pretty much retired. He gave up trying to please you fickle bastards. He caved in and spent the 90s pandering to the adult contemporary scene. And time hasn’t been kind to his street cred. It’s less cool now than it ever was to listen to Billy Joel. We here at Hussalonia Lo-Fi Solutions might be inclined to feel sorry him, if he weren’t so fucking rich and well loved by our moms. Nevertheless, we’re offering this: a song-for-song cover of Glass Houses. We feel that Glass Houses represents the struggle between low and high pop culture. And Hussalonia resents that struggle. We hate and love all pop music equally. So what can you expect from our version of Glass Houses? It’s lo-fi, raw, unhinged and full of musical in-jokes. Maybe it will inspire the kids to reassess Billy Joel’s career. Have we lost our minds? Is this a joke? A tribute? A parody? Are we going to get sued? Maybe, maybe, maybe, maybe, maybe!

I was going to just post a little quote from that, but then I realized that it was all THE TRUTH as I would have written it, were I a talented young pair of musicians, and surrendered to the inevitable.

I grew up listening to Billy Joel. We played our cassette of Glass Houses in the car so many times that we wore it out, and had to buy another copy. I had every song on this album memorized before I knew what most of the lyrics were even talking about (I only figured out why a "walk through Bedford Stuy alone" was such a big deal a couple years ago.) Informed by a punk rock sensibility that I would otherwise never have encountered in elementary school, it directly shaped the musical tastes I would carry into adulthood. And now, covered in its entirety by a two-man rock band in 2006, it's transformed into an album that retains the excellent songwriting of the original but sheds the schlocky veneer that's made Joel so criminally uncool since the 1980s.

You can download the entire cover album (and donate, if you like it) here. You can preview snippets from (and buy) the original album here. Both are excellent and fill me with giddy, inarticulate joy.

My only complaint about Hussalonia's cover of Glass Houses is that it took me four years to find it.

(NOTE TO CLIO: the cover of "All for Leyna" is particularly great)

Tonight Scott and I went to see "Moon," a new film being distributed by Fox Searchlight starring Sam Rockwell and Kevin Spacey, both of whom turned in fantastic performances. It's about a man on a three-year, solo contract running a mining operation on the dark side of the moon. And it was so fantastic that I'm kind of in shock.

It's also in limited release, and I can't seem to find any indication as to what plans for wide release might be. I suspect box office numbers will help determine that? So if you live in or near New York or LA (which seem to be the only cities playing it) go out right now and buy a ticket and bring a friend and help make a Juno out of this thing. Because it was THAT. GOOD.

And...seriously, if you know me? You'll know that while there are many things I enjoy, there are actually very few that I put a hardcore stamp of unconditional THAT WAS AWESOME approval on. And "Moon" just became one of them.

Short okay not-so-short, unspoilery explanation of LOVE:

"Moon" is a hard science fiction film. It's set in outer space, and its plot is intimately tied to that setting. But it's the kind of science fiction that we so rarely see anymore -- thoughtful and interesting, a future that quietly goes about its business in the background, technology that's convincing in part because it looks like it's been used. It's a one-man moon colony but it's also a mining camp and a home -- there's dust and dirt, grey old spacesuits and rumpled clothes, photos taped to mirrors and postit notes stuck to the robots, hair that he's let grow a little too long and weird, awkward messages from home.

It's hard SF. There's no handwaving away of inconvenient details. It's neither a fluffy popcorn romp nor a needlessly high-strung thriller. I don't want to say anything else because I don't want to spoil it (I REALLY DON'T WANT TO SPOIL IT) but it never did any of the stupid, cheap things I worried it might. I can't tell you how long it's been since I felt that way about a movie that's set in space. Or a movie that has much of an SF plot at all, really. (SO. LONG.)

So, yes. The plot and setting are as straightforwardly SF as they come. (Which isn't to say they're dull or predictable, as they aren't at all.) But the movie -- the experience of watching it -- is deeply, beautifully human. And "human" doesn't mean wallowing in angst and pain and awfulness. It doesn't mean people screaming at each other for scene after scene.

Sam is a man who's lived alone on a space station for three years. His struggles make perfect sense, are real and simple and quiet and all the more beautiful and heartbreaking and satisfying because of it. He never becomes a characature; he's never forced into some mold or another for the sake of the story. He's Sam, and he's kind of lonely, and sometimes he doesn't bother to shave for a while, and he can't wait to go home and see his young daughter.

So. Yeah. GO SEE IT if you possibly can. If there's some way to ask your local indy theater to try and get ahold of it, do so.

I'm going to go see it again if anyone's interested?

(I was going to write a few specific, spoilery thoughts behind a cut, but...has anyone else actually seen this? If not, you know -- you really REALLY don't want to spoiled for this film, so I'm not even going to provide the temptation if there's no point in doing so.)

ETA: There may be spoilers in the comments! Just a fair warning!

There are approximately ten kabillion other things I should be doing right now, not the least of which is replying to comments on my previous entry, but I'm trying to start a new scene (which I hate doing) and I'm drinking coke and tequila (which I love doing but is not helping anything) so you know....TIME FOR A SHIP MEME FROM [livejournal.com profile] sainfoin_fields I GUESS?!

Note that I had to stop following everything with "AND I AM SO ASHAMED" because it was getting repetative. So just assume that this entire meme is a black hole of dignity and go from there.

::My top ten of all time in something resembling chronological order::

Goliath/Elisa (Gargoyles)
The Phantom/Christine (Phantom of the Opera, I was one of those teenagers I'm sorry)
Odo/Kira (Deep Space Nine)
Mulan/Shang (MULAAAAAAAAAAAAAN)
Ellie/SPACE (Contact)
Remus/Sirius (Harry Potter, AND CANON AS FAR AS I'M CONCERNED)
Saki/Madarame (Genshiken)
Mai/Zuko (Avatar: The Last Airbender)
Jet/Zuko (...*sighs* This started out on the first list and then I had a SHAME ATTACK and had to move it to the second and then I felt I was being dishonest so I MOVED IT BACK AGAIN.)
Emma/William (EMMA, as in the manga, though that reminds me to add Darcy/Elizabeth...)
Fakir/Ahiru (Princess Tutu)
Ohno/Chigake (Antique Bakery!!!!!!!!!)
Akira/Hikaru (Hikaru no Go)
Barney/Robin (How I Met Your Mother)
John/Cameron (SARAH CONNOR CHRONICLES D: D: D: D:)

Shut up there were totally ten you just counted wrong.

The wholly unsurprising confession continues behind the cut )

So I finished reading Hikaru no Go. And it continued to be really excellent, straight through to the end! In fact, in some ways I enjoyed the latter chapters more -- as Hikaru and the others got a little older and their world became more complicated, I found them and their relationships with each other more interesting. While I would have liked for the character arcs to be tied up a bit, I do feel like the series had a very tight thematic arc, and overall it seems to have done exactly what it set out to!

THAT SAID: I know perfectly well that LARGE NUMBERS of you folks are in (or have been in) the Hikago fandom, and I have some QUESTIONS. IMPORTANT QUESTIONS FOR YOU. )

Also: I made like 150 icons. Yeah, I know.
ali_wildgoose: (Default)
I wasn't going to post about the Oscars. But I keep sitting here Twittering about them and talking to Clio and wanting to use my my Slumdog Millionaire icon, SO I HAVE GIVEN IN.

OSCAR SPOILERS BEHIND THE CUT BITCHES )

ETA after watching more of the red carpet:

RYAN SEACREST: It seems like sudden, overwhelming fame!

RPATTZ: I still can't really get over it. I was sort of laughing about it in the car on the way here, it's completely ridiculous.

RYAN: So the producers call and say they want you to present at the Academy Awards, and you say...yes?

RPATTZ: I thought it was a joke but...I seem to be here?

YES, RPATTZ. YOU WERE, INDEED, AT THE OSCARS. FUNNY THAT.

In a fit of late-night insanity and under the influence of [livejournal.com profile] rawles, I have created a new community: [livejournal.com profile] you_fight_good! It is dedicated to Mulan and Shang being hot and awesome, together or separately but you know, preferably together.

If you have ever drawn a picture, written a fic, made some icons or posted some interesting meta about these kids, PLEASE feel free to go and crosspost them there, even if they're old! Especially if they're old, actually! Because seriously, having all this stuff in the same place would be LOVELY. <3

ALSO: pimping is awesome! Y'all know the drill.
ali_wildgoose: (Default)
Someone posted a Disney Princess secret on [livejournal.com profile] fandomsecrets today, about their distaste for Jasmine being roped into that brand and the idea of her being put in a ballgown, and I made the following comment in response:

"I also hate that they generally include Mulan, instead of letting her be awesome and androgynous in her own space."

To which someone anonymously (?!) responded:

How is Mulan 'androgynous'? )

I had some people over tonight for a Valentine-themed birthday party, in which we all made cards out of construction paper and elmers glue. A lot of folks very kindly made me cards, which are now covering my fridge (I should post a photo...!) but one in particular seemed the sort of thing y'all might get a kick out of.

Yes, my REAL LIFE FRIENDS tease me about this, too... )

ETA: CHECKED MY EMAIL, and [livejournal.com profile] vermilionsun ALSO MADE ME A ZUKO VALENTINE. I THINK THE WORLD IS TRYING TO TELL ME SOMETHING XD

I resented being asked to pick my FAVORITE SHIP in the icon meme I did a few days ago, and in retaliation against this injustice I have decided to create a meme of my own. A meme in which all ships are equal (by which I mean equally embarrassing and ridiculous, of course.)

THE MEME: Pick your favorite icon for each of your ships (if you only have one, that's fine too!) then fess up as to what you're doing on that boat in the first place.

Shipping confession via iconography behind the cut! )

JOIN ME IN MEMING! Just paste this code in as many time as you have ships you want to talk about and fill in the details!

...as I'm supposed to be asleep. BUT! Because everyone else is doing it:

Dear YuleTide Writer )
ali_wildgoose: (Default)
Um...yeah, if you aren't interested in what's up in American politics right now, or if you aren't a big fan of Barack Obama, you should probably not read the rest of this post! (Which is basically about how I want to draw little hearts around his name in my notebook)

In fact I am putting it behind a cut! )

Also, to the folks who left comments on that secret note meme which I couldn't reply to (due to said post reaching its comment limit) -- AWWW YOU GUYS!!! <3 <3
ali_wildgoose: (Default)
I can't go to sleep until I finish my fic for [livejournal.com profile] kindoflikeyou. So I'm posting on LJ. See the logic? Clear as crystal.

First: a meme! I did this ages ago, but I've written a cubic assload more fic since then, so it'll probably be more entertaining for everyone this time around.

Stump the Writer!

[1] Go to the list of my fics and pick out a line or three from one of my stories. (Must be a full line, please -- no sentence fragments or speech tags or other such nonsense.)
[2] I will respond with which story of mine I think it's from. I SWEAR I WON'T CHEAT.
[3] A ficlet about pretty much anything (and in any fandom) to whoever can stump me.

Second: Apparently every Disney movie ever made can be viewed on YouTube, and recently I decided to track down and rewatch an old favorite that I hadn't seen in a long time: Sleeping Beauty. I remembered that it was gorgeous, but I was curious how well it would hold up. Verdict: PRETTY DAMN WELL!

Sleeping Beauty fangirling and youtube video behind the cut! )

ETA: I have belatedly realized my error in judgment. No one is going to play meme with me because YOU ARE ALL WATCHING DISNEY MOVIES ON YOUTUBE.

Curses.

SO EPISODES 10-11 OF AVATAR WERE LEAKED ONTO THE INTERNET.

AND I HAVE TO BE ON A PLANE IN LESS THAN TEN HOURS SO I CAN'T REALLY GET ONTO CHAT TO SPAZZ AT PEOPLE PROPERLY.

BUT I HAVE SOME THINGS TO SAY. AND I THOROUGHLY ENCOURAGE THE REST OF YOU TO DOWNLOAD THE EPISODES AND SPAZZ ABOUT THEM IN THE COMMENTS BELOW FOR THE SAKE OF MY AMUSEMENT AND GLEE.

AND YES THIS ENTIRE POST IS IN CAPS.

SPOILERZ? HELL YEAH. )

ETA: FURTHER FLAIL POST-REWATCH )

Just when I thought that Avatar could never live up to my ridiculous expectations, IT EXCEEDED THEM TENFOLD.

(I'll be watching episodes 7-9 on Monday night, so PLEASE NO SPOILERS, I BEG YOU.)

SPOILERY thoughts on 'The Avatar and the Firelord' behind the cut )

I have something very important to tell you.

I just watched the first seven episodes of Romeo x Juliet, a new show currently airing in Japan. I've been sort of quietly dreading it ever since I first heard it was in production, largely because I HATE the "Romeo and Juliet" story, as a whole, and was sure this would be tiresome in all the same ways. But yesterday I finally broke down and torrented all the decently-fansubbed episodes out so far.

I'm actually not even sure what to say about this show, as it's now nearly seven in the morning and I haven't even slept yet. Except that...well, it's seven in the morning and I haven't slept because I COULDN'T STOP MYSELF FROM WATCHING ALL THE EPISODES I HAD.

Juliet is a crossdressing princess in hiding, the last surviving member of her family, who's also a swashbuckling masked vigilante.

Romeo rides a flying horse and first meets Juliet when he rescues her in the midst of said vigilantism, to which he is not-so-secretly sympathetic.

WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE IS A CHARACTER WHO HIDES JULIET AND THE REMAINS OF HER ENTOURAGE IN HIS HOUSE, AND HITS ON CROSSDRESSING JULIET IN BETWEEN REHEARSALS.

VERONA IS A GODDAMN FLOATING ISLAND.

I JUST....

I AM REPEATEDLY ASTOUNDED BY THE LEVEL AND CONSISTENCY OF AWESOME INVOLVED IN THIS SHOW?!

The trailer is below, and if any of this sounds interesting to you the series can be downloaded from Anime Suki. (I HIGHLY recommend only watching the Shinsen Subs version, even if the other group is farther ahead. It's worh the wait.)

COPIOUS ICON MAKING MAY FOLLOW.

ali_wildgoose: (Default)
Why yes, I AM supposed to be working!

But that's not important. What's important is that [livejournal.com profile] caladan_dd's paintings are goddamn gorgeously awesome. So what if several of them are of Remus Lupin and Nymphadora Tonks staring soulfully into each others eyes -- these paintings are so excellent THEY MAKE ME CARE ABOUT SOULFUL EYE STARING.

Also, there's one with Lupin, Harry and the Veil that damn near kills me.

Seriously, though. Get your asses over there.
